A child attending Bumbles who has a bandage around their ankle following an injury at home. They must first be assessed by a doctor and given approval to be able to attend the setting.

A risk assessment is carried out to identify any hazards or support required for the child while in the setting.

1. Running and falling causing further injury.

2. Bumping into other children causing further injury.

3. Difficulty getting changed/putting coat or shoes on.

4. Getting the bandage wet when outdoors in wet weather, or when participating in water play.

5. Further injury by tripping on resources around room, or when outdoors.

6. Risk of falling when climbing up or down stairs, or when getting up and down from the grassy steps in Bumbilos

1. Monitor child closely at all times and encourage them not to run/climb/jump, especially on uneven ground.

2. Make other children aware of the injury and encourage them to take care when nearby. Position child where they will have less contact with others during a game, still ensuring that they don’t feel left out.

3. Staff member to accompany child on the stairs, ensuring they are holding onto their hand, or lifting them down where appropriate

4. Staff to ensure regular cleaning of resources and toys around the room to prevent trip hazards

5. Staff to assist with getting dressed when needed.

Providing a safe environment for the child to continue to engage in day-to-day activities and experiences, therefore not limiting their engagement in learning.
