This activity involves children creating their own Lava Lamps using household materials such as clear bottles/jars, vegetable oil, water, food colouring and alka-seltzer tablets. The activity focuses on sensory fun whilst exploring and encouraging learning opportunities based in science.

  • Vegetable oil, Food Colouring & Alka-Seltzers – Risk of ingestion and possible choking hazard
  • Glass Jars – If glass jars are used, risk of breakage causing cuts
  • Skin Sensitivity – Some children may be sensitive to the oil or food colouring. Potential to cause irritation if rubbed into eyes
  • Slippy Surfaces – Oil will create a very slippy surface should it be spilled, causing slips and falls
  • Challenging Behaviours – Some children may choose not to follow instructions, such as putting items in their mouths or being too aggressive around glass/chemicals
  • As per Minimum Standards the required ratio based on the age group must be met. Ratio may be adjusted if majority of children are younger so long as the minimum standards per age group are met
  • Ideal Ratio 1:4 (younger children) & 1:6 (Older Children) children can be swapped in and out
  • Staff must be vigilant in their supervising of the children
  • Alka-Seltzer tablets will be given out by a member of staff one at a time then appropriately placed out of reach of the children
  • Staff to discuss the activity with the children before they engage. Give the children the opportunity to ask and also answer questions around the risks and hazards. Set clear rules for engagement of the activity
  • Where appropriate plastic jars/containers may be used to prevent breakages
  • Children with sensitive skin conditions (such as eczema) may be required to wear gloves to protect their skin
  • Any spills are to be cleaned in a timely manner ensuring the area is not a slip hazard
  • Once a child is finished with the activity ensure supervised hand washing is observed and that children do not put hands near their mouths before being washed
  • Contents of jars are disposed of appropriately and thoroughly cleaned
  • Provides visual stimulation for children who benefit most from sensory based play
  • Supports listening, understanding instructions, concentration and engagement
  • Creates new or strengthens current relationships through shared goals and teamwork
  • Provides learning opportunities in science based play, exploring and learning about chemical reactions
