St John’s Ambulance Service will be visiting our settings. They will show the children the equipment that they use along with a viewing of the ambulance vehicle. This is a great opportunity for the children to learn more about the service that Paramedics provide, along with broadening their knowledge on the equipment that they use and what they are used for

  1. Equipment Inside The Vehicle – The equipment inside the vehicle could cause shocks, cuts/scrapes, bruises to the children if not handled correctly
  2. Car Doors – The doors on the vehicle may close on a child’s hand/fingers causing potential cuts, bruising or breaks
  3. Step To Reach Vehicle Interior – The Ambulance is elevated higher off the ground than a regular vehicle, using a step to reach the interior. The children, especially the younger children may find it more difficult to enter or exit the vehicle, slipping or tripping from the step, causing falls which could lead to bumps, bruising or breaks
  4. Environment – The Ambulance will make use of the car park beside the setting. As the car par is used by the community, the gates will remain open during the visit. Children may try to wander out of the car park, potentially causing severe injury/death should they walk out onto the busy road
  5. Safer Strangers – As the car park will be open for public access, it is possible that a stranger may come into the car park to look at the ambulance or take photos
  1. The children will be spoken with before entering the vehicle and informed that they should not touch any of the equipment inside the vehicle unless instructed to do so by one of the medical team
  2. A member of staff will stand by the vehicle doors whilst the children are exploring the vehicle to minimise the risk of the doors closing on a child
  3. A member of staff will assist the smaller children in and out of the vehicle to minimise the risk of trips and falls. The member of staff will remain nearby for older children too as the enter/ leave the vehicle.
  4. A member of staff will stand close to the car park gate, ensuring that children do not leave the car park. This member of staff will also be aware of the public, being vigilant in regards to anyone who may be passing and trying to take photos/videos.
  5. A member of staff who is based at the car park entrance will inform any member of the public who may try to enter the car park that they cannot do so unless they are a member of the church or needing access to their car, if it is parked within the car park.

The children get to broaden their knowledge on the service that St Johns and the wider ambulance service provides by exploring the vehicle and equipment that they use. Learning through fun by giving the children opportunities to ask questions and learn the role of paramedics.
